For our assessment, we chose to take an in-depth look into the tire industry.Drawn to the topicbecause of the industry’s large carbon footprint per unit sold and itshistoricreputationas an environmentalpolluterof PVC manufacturing byproducts, which have been linked to liver cancer in tire plant workers.

The impact of worker PVC exposure has been well studied and in response to that research, the EPA has regulated the manufacturing process and the industry has taken subsequent action to reduce PVC vapor exposure (Criswell 3).

Tire consumption is not considered to be an optional luxury good in industrialized countries; therefore, eliminating tire use is not currently a realistic goal; therefore, creating a long term sustainable plan…
